There are two lines here, one either side of a platform at this station which serves the adjacent ferry terminal. The former goods area is on the Up side and contained two sidings spanned by a gantry. Larne was originally a mixed gauge station, the narrow gauge B&LR
trailing in before the station and running parallel to the mainline into the station. In mixed gauge days, one face of the island platform served narrow gauge trains and the other standard gauge. The narrow gauge passenger service into the station closed in 1932 and totally in
1950. On the far side of the lough, Ballylumford power station can be seen on Islandmagee, a peninsula which extends out from Whitehead to Larne.
